Bengal Institute Celebrates GIS Day 2017
More than hundred participants from different institutional background, young professionals and students, gathered under one umbrella to celebrate ‘GIS Day 2017’ arranged by Bengal Institute for Architecture, Landscape and Settlements on 15th November (Wednesday) at Bengal Centre, Dhaka . The theme was “GIS Matters: Geographic Intelligence for a Better World” and to align with the theme; the event had successful researchers, professionals;  specialist in GIS as guests and speakers to promote essential uses of GIS.
Guests and Speakers
The guests and speakers were, Ar. Kazi Khaleed Ashraf (Director General, Bengal Institute), Dr. Abed Chaudhury (Geneticist and Science Writer), Ar. Saif Ul Haque (Director Research, Bengal Institute), Dr. Amanat Ullah Khan (Professor, Dpt. of Geography and Environment, University of Dhaka), Dr. Sheikh Tawhidul Islam (Professor, Dpt. of Geography and Environment, Jahangirnagar University), Mr. John William Taylor (Project Director, UNDP), Mr. Mohammad Abdul Hadi (Bangladesh Country Representative, ESRI South Asia), Mr. MD Zahid Hasan Siddiquee (GIS and RS Specialist, Bangladesh) and Mr. Sazid Ibna Zaman (Mahidol University, Thailand). The event was moderated by Ar. Md Masudul Islam (Research Coordinator, Bengal Institute), Mr. Mohammad Arfar Razi (Research Associate, Bengal Institute) and Ar. Tazrin Ahmed (Research Associate, Bengal Institute).
Introducing the significance of GIS Day 2017 by Mohammad Arfar Razi, Research Associate, Bengal Institute
The GIS Day at Bengal Institute was a combination of 4 sessions which included Keynote Session by 4 professionals, Participants’ Response Session, Special Discussion Session and Certificate Giving Session. Mohammad Arfar Razi started the event by introducing the significance of GIS Day. He gave a brief introduction on Bengal Institute and its use of Geospatial Technology. He soon introduced the presenter MD. Masudul Islam Shammo, Research Co-ordinator, Bengal Institute. He discussed about projects Dhaka Nexus— a network of cities and Sylhet— a small town project. He stressed on the water bodies of Bangladesh and how GIS is significant to that.

Then key note speakers presented and shared their work briefly with audiences. 


Sazid Ibna Zaman

The first keynote speaker was Sazid Ibna Zaman, Mahidol University, Thailand who spoke about his several researches based on health sectors using GIS, especially epidemiologic factors of tropical disease: Malaria and the remarkable contribution on identifying the tracks of spreading Malaria throughout the country.



Mohammad Zahid Hasan Sidiquee

The second keynote speaker, Mohammed Zahid Hasan Siddiquee, GIS and RS Specialist, Bangladesh spoke about ‘Application of Geo-spatial Technologies in Integrated Water Resource Management with special focus on SDG’. He stressed on the importance of efficient water management in urban and rural level planning for sustainable development.









Mohammad Abdul Hadi

After a short break, the third keynote speaker Mohammad Abdul Hadi, Bangladesh Country Representative, ESRI South Asia spoke about the ‘Next Generation Desktop Application to Real Time Enterprise GIS’ which was an interesting presentation of ArcGIS pro and it’s several designed interfaces which will facilitate the ArcGIS users in upcoming days.






Dr. Sheikh Tawhidul Islam



The final speaker was Dr. Sheikh Tawhidul Islam, Professor of Department of Geography and Environment, JU Bangladesh who spoke about ‘People, Place and Processes: Geospatial Applications in Planning Exercises in Bangladesh’.









Discussion Session
The last and dynamic session was the discussion session with erudite persons invited in the event and this session was very informative to audiences. Moderated by Ar. Masudul Islam the special discussion session received words from Ar. Kazi Khaleed Ashraf, Dr. Abed Chaudhury, Ar. Saif Ul Haque, Dr. Amanat Ullah Khan, Dr. Sheikh Tawhidul Islam, Mr. John William Taylor and Mr. Mohammad Abdul Hadi. 

The session ended with concluding statement from Ar. Kazi Khaleed Ashraf “Think like a farmer, work like a geographer”

The whole event was very informative, educational and encouraging among students who enthusiastically participated. The erudite persons, who have pragmatic expertise in GIS field, inspired all the students presented to identify their career goals and opportunities. The inclusive program made a remarkably exceptional networking platform by including the students who are going to be the future professionals.
